to prevent iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).
IDD causes goiter (minor), mental retardation, brain damage in children. in women who are pregnant, she may hav miscarriages, stillbirth etc. children w/ IDD may grow mentally retarded, abnormal speech, movements, hearing etc. the affordable stuff to prevent it is consuming iodized salt. that's why it's important for children.

Iodised salt contains Iodine, a chemical needed for proper thyroid function. Since we have more seafood available (which contains iodine) it is not so critical. Without iodine people develop goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland.

Iodized salt is really an important part of your child's diet. When there is an iodine deficiency it leads to a fall in production of thyroid hormones, and an increase in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland or goiter. An iodine deficiency may have negative effects on growth and development especially in the brain.

Iodized salt contains iodide(a form of iodine) which is important in the development and proper function of the thyroid gland.Virtually all of the iodine in your body resides in the thyroid. The thyroid gland is involved in regulating the metabolism.Only trace amounts of this nutrient are needed by humans.Getting enough of it while your young can help ensure that your thyroid develops and functions properly. There are some better sources like sea foods but it's probably easier to have your child use salt.

In some areas of the world the soils are deficient in iodine and
consequently crops and people's diets are deficient in iodine. Low iodine affects the thyroid gland which requires iodine in order to produce thyroid hormones which play a role in growth and metabolism. The thyroid becomes enlarged to compensate resulting in a condition called goiter.
In order to reverse this problem iodine is added to salt, hence, iodized salt.

What I like to do is cook with iodized salt and save the sea salt for salads and anything I make that isn't on the stove. That way we all get both.

Doesn't the iodine in salt also help prevent radioactive contamination of the thyroid as well? I remember reading that somewhere. Don;t know if that's relevant, but there you go anyways.
