Mixed martial arts with a combination of standup fighting and ground fighting to compliment it.

There is no "best" martial art; but rather they are all paths that ultimately lead to the same destination - an attainment of personal development and enlightenment. However, that is if you are wanting to pursue a "martial art" and not simply a system of techniques for beating up another person.

If you are interested primarily in defending yourself, simply the physical aspects of learning techniques for self defense, then systems such as Krav Maga or Southern Chinese Kenpo or perhaps Mixed Martial Arts will help you as they are all highly developed systems of self defense and there are many competent instructors throughout the world; you simply need to visit them and find the system and teacher that fits your needs and personal abilities.

However, if you are interested in finding a lifelong path that will give you a way of attaining personal harmony, spiritual development (by this I mean a deeper understanding of your own relationship with whatever you define as "divine" or universal, not any specific religious application), as well as physical health and well being and the ability to defend yourself if the extreme need arises, then I would suggest a more traditional "art" and teacher.

There are many good systems from around the world that can help you achieve this goal. It is a journey that will take you through a great deal of self discovery. The first step is to find that teacher that you can connect with and learn from. As you grow, your further path will become revealed to you; for we are all different and walk different ways.

The best martial art is a combination of more than one.
You should learn one really well and use it as a base, then pick another that is completely different than the first and try to blend the two together.
I do not suggest spending a year at one and then quiting it and starting another for a year. You have to have a good base art to build from.
I like Karate as a base and adding Aikido.

I have been doing Martial Arts for 14 months now. It has changed my life, has become a way of life for me. Martial Art's teaches you discipline, self control, how to be more humble in your daily life, to be more confident. I am 43 years old, I feel great, I am in much better shape then I was in 14 months ago, and I have something I share with my 2 kids.

I've been doing martial arts for nearly 20 years now. It will affect one's life in many directions, confidence, discipline, respect, endurance and self defense.
I believe a combinations of kick boxing, grappling/jujitsu and roman wrestling is the best in UFC competitions.

All forms of martial arts build mental and physical strength, courage, endurance and makes you a better member of the community.

What schools are available to you? You have the right to sit in on a session and watch.

What is your physical capabilities?

Do you really want to learn, or just collect a bunch of colored belts?

Do you want to learn to protect yourself on the street, or go around and play macho?

If you want something practical, using your own strengths, something that will train you in "real world" situations...then learn KRAV MAGA.
