Mandarin is deifinitely one of the most difficult language to pick up. Even some Chinese people may not be able to handle it well.

If you're non-Chinese, it's ok. Start with Hanyu Pinyin, it's Mandarin phonetics. Once you've got the hang of pronouncing the hanyu pinyin, you'll sound better.

Have more Mandarin-speaking friends. Don't be shy about getting them to communicate with you in simple Mandarin. And when don't be afraid that you might be saying it wrongly. That's what learning is about.

Besides that, you can create a conducive environment for yourself to learn. Listening to Mandarin songs, watching Mandarin tv programmes can stimulate your senses to pick up the language better and faster.

Learning is never easy, so don't give up. =)

IMO, this language is much, much, much easier than English. As a non-native you should listen a lot, read a lot, speak a lot, and write a lot. Get yourself surrounded with Mandarin speaking environment many hours a day, many days a week, and many weeks a year, and you will master the language before you realize it.

That was what I did long time ago and hey, it worked!

Han yu pin yin will be of great help together with local chinese newspaper. Just ask Chinese friends to help u to kick start with hanyu pin yin and u should be on ur way. I am learning Spanish myself now and I often remind myself that to learn a foreign tongue is tough but there are millions who have learnt it. Thus the fundamental is still practice, good luck! if u need some help on Mandarin u can always write to me. God bless!
