My wife and I have 3 cats, and one of them recently had a UTI. After two cycles of penicillin, the vet retested him, and said he was cured. She then gave us prozac to help with the re-training stage.

Everything seemed ok for a while, but he has recently started to go to the bathroom again in places other than his litterbox (such as blankets, shoes, or anything else that may be left on the floor).

We are at our wits end and are about to lock him in the bathroom (because of the tile floor)with his food, water, pillow, and litterbox. What else can we do to re-train him to start using his box again?

poor kitty..

use non-scented clumping litter as this is the one most cats prefer (they hate scented)

with 3 cats you ideally should have 4 boxes.. one per cat plus one more (and they should not all be together)

dont have the box in a scarey place like next to the laundry machine

feed him good quality food (in Canada NUTRAM is the best for UTI.. I know your vet probably put him on Science Diet or some other crap but remeber vets are paid to put cats on certain foods - go to pet supply store and look for better, and watch magnesium content -get the lowest, never use grocery or wal mart type foods)

feed him a small (teaspoon) amount of canned chicken and rice once daily, mix in 2 teaspoons of water to make a soup - the additional water intake will help his urinary tract

was he declawed at any point??? declawed cats frequently come to refuse to use their litter... not much you can do...

shutting him in a bathroom for part of the time may help - good luck

oh - also NO milk or fish - calcuim contributes to urinary tract problems

Yes, uti's in cats are so frustrating. But remember the cat hurts. He's not trying to be bad.
Take him back to vet to see if he's plugged again.
Then put him back in the bathroom. It's not punishment. When he has a choice of a very few places to pee, on his food, where he sleeps, where he plays, or his litterbox, he will start to pick his litterbox. This really is the best way.

Putting him in the bathroom to retrain is an excellent idea. But it could be he has the UTI again if he started going other places. If the UTI is still gone then put him in the bathroom with a litter box, food and water. Good luck.

Like when you bring home a new kitten, you have to take it to the kitty litter regularly so it knows where to do. I'd be doing that with your cat. Taking it every hour and putting it in the kitty litter. Hopefully then it will learn.

You can't lock him in the bathroom with food, water and pillow. Cats will not go to the toilet where it sleeps or eat and you'll be doing more harm than good.

You might want to check to see if the UTI is back again. If not, time and patience are what its going to take.
