When a female mosquito sticks her beak into your skin to get a meal of blood, she leaves a little of her saliva in the wound. I guess almost all humans are allergic to something in mosquito saliva. So, we get an allergic reaction, and the skin around the bite itches and swells up.

There is a venom, not a deadly one, that mosquitos inject in you that result in the dilation of blood vessels, causing fluid to seep in the surrounding structure. Dilation means that something gets bigger. This happens with a lot of other type of bites also. If you have a mosquito bite, you should not scratch it because it could cause an infection.
