Stop taking it NOW!

Reasons:

1. You're feeling worse. That's not normal. It can be VERY dangerous. Talk to your doctor immediately.

2. It's not too late to stop this medication now before you become addicted to it (it takes a few weeks). Once your body is dependent on it, it can be very difficult and painful for you to quit this medication.

Now, I'd like to share some personal experience. I was prescribed Paxil for both anxiety and depression. It didn't help much with either but did make me feel like a "zombie." I also gained a lot of weight. When I decided to go off it two years later, I suffered very uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, sweating, insomnia, etc.) which lasted a few months.

From my personal experience and subsequent reading, I learned that all antidepressants can be dangerous. While some people may not have serious side effects while taking them and may benefit from them, many people experience disturbing withdrawal symptoms (some physical, some emotional) once they start the quitting process. That's why it's best to avoid antidepressants unless there is absolutely no other choice (you or someone else's life is in danger, or other types of therapy haven't worked well enough).

You must give the medication at least 6 weeks to get into your system and start helping you feel better. The doctor should have told you this. My doctor prescribed a very small dose of valium to take with the paxil for the first 4 weeks. The only (rare) side effect I had with Paxil was losing nearly 50 pounds in 3 months. I went from a size 8 to a size 1 in 3 months and have now stabilized at size 4

Medicines sometimes make things work. You need to decide if it is right for you. It made my stomach hurt. I can't stand to take it. I've been on many, but the only one that has ever helped me was Lexapro. Everything just seemed okay when I was on it. I didn't stress out too much about anything and I was able to laugh and have more fun on it. I eventually weened myself off of it after about 9 months and have been okay without it. The best way to get rid of depression though is to like what you do everyday and be around people that you like most of the time. If you don't like your job, find something else. If your friends are crappy, find some new ones. If you need to, pick up and move, make a fresh start. I found a new job, quit my other job, and then decided what friends were really friends and worth my time. Everything has been fine since then.

Honestly, I would not chose paxil. I tried it for only a few days and the side effects were just not worth it to me.
I would hope you consider a more natural, alternative approach for your problem to include nutrition and perhaps herbal supplements. I realize some would say this approach is not for them, but to each his own. I wouldn't condemn something I have not tried.

Again, I recommend reading a book called 'the antidepressant fact book' to gain some additional insight about these types of medications.

I hope the source of your problem is truly being addressed, and that you take a proactive stance instead of just a reactive one.

Good luck.

I've been taking Paxil for about 2 and a half months now. In the last few weeks I've noticed a huge difference in my dreams. The dreams I've been having lately seem to last all night and they are very clear. When I wake up the in the morning and think about them they seem to real! The dreams aren't scary or anything, but they're always weird or obscure."

Normally, antidepressants need about six weeks to kick in. However, in my experience, if it doesn't make you feel any better in about a week, go see your doctor to have your medication changed.

I am concerned though that you mentioned that you will be taking the medicine for a few days. It doesn't work that way. You have to be on medication for as long as your doctor says so. You can't just decide when you will stop because only your doctor can tell whether you have improved from your condition.

Also, you need psychotherapy sessions with your doctor to complement your medication in order for you to overcome or control your depression.

Taking antidepressants alone won't make your depression go away.

Good luck.

P.S. Don't self-medicate with antidepressants.

Paxil is notorious for side effects...especially when you try to get off of it. The side effects range from weird dreams, to tremors, to throwing up, dizziness, etc. There have been a few lawsuit about Paxil as well.

I take Paxil and it works fine for me. Other family members do as well and it works great for them. I do NOT have the side effects that you are having with it. I would suggest you tell your doctor to switch your medication to Lexipro or something that one of your family members has taken. If it works great on them, it more than likely will on you as well. Best of luck to you!
