I want to retire early! SF with no kids & big dogs. Looking for a home in decent shape, 800-1200 sqft, preferably with a little land. I can relocate anywhere in the USA - rural, small town, small city (NMT 100,000) but NOT a larger city. Price, safety, and stress free living are my number one priorities. Also, great outdoor lifestyles activities (hiking, mountain biking...etc) and low property & state taxes would be a huge bonus. I am fine with rural as long as I'm within about 100 miles of an area with modern convieniences. Any suggestions? Any one know of any great places, tucked away somewhere with cheap, easy, stress free living?

You could pull that off easy in or around North Central Arkansas! Do some research - the city I live in has 10,000 people and has plenty of rural areas surrounding and it is a great place to live!

You can buy some land inexpensively in the Catskills and you are only about 1 hour from Albany and about 2 hours from NYC. Depending on where you buy, you can get land for about $12,500 per acre.

As far as getting a house as well, well, you may be looking at something very small. Building a house in this country, wherever it may be, is expensive.

It is very safe there, though. Tons of outdoor stuff to do. You can go hiking in the Catskills State Park, you can go mountain biking, there is skiing there in the winter if you like at Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain (also Bellayre, but I've never been there). You can go canoeing in the area. Plenty of winter sports in addition to alpine skiing - there are places to go cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and if you really want to try something new and very challenging - plenty of great places to go Ice climbing. There are many trails for snowmobiling as well.
If you like to go antiquing, there are many great places, including the cute little town of Phoenicia.
The autumn is great in the Catskills - beautiful places to drive, places to view the foliage, etc.
Good variety of restaurants there as well.
Oh, and the area has been growing, in terms of popularity. So, you could buy a place inexpensively and the value should go up.

Property taxes are cheap too, certainly much more so than metro NY/NJ. I have a ski house on 23 acres, but its divided into several parcels and the house itself is only on a 1 acre plot, so my taxes are very low.

I live in NJ but head up there on the weekends, especially the fall and winter. It really is a peaceful retreat from the hectic, crowded area down here. I've seen bear, coyote, hummingbirds, deer, snakes, eagles, etc. on my property - tons of wildlife up there.

Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions.

Kentucky has lots of beautiful small towns and most are within an hour from Lexington, Louisville or Cincinnati. And the homes are pretty inexpensive.
