They were commonly known as firemen...but they did not start fires ar spread fires and so the term firefighter was coined. I need to know who coined it.

actually the term firemen goes back to the railroad days, it was their job to keep the fires going on the train to keep the steam up. I will never forget calling my dad a fireman and being correct, he told me 'Firemen keep fires going, i put them out'. That was back in the 70's and i never made the mistake again.

Debby, I'm a "firefighter" or a "fireman" and have been in the service for 22 years and taught many classes to both firemen and firewomen.....i dont know if this helps helps but as far back as the 1800's when some of the first wheeled water carrier wagon's were around, i have always read that the men, and yes it was most of the time men, were known as firefighters. women almost always were known as a auxiliary unit that assisted with bringing water and food to the men that were fighting the fires. they also took care of cuts and injuries. most of the women were wives of the men that were firefighters also. i will do some more investigating for you on this and see what i can find. if your interested in f.f, check out firehouse.com
