I have a cocker spaniel and we've just come home from the vet who confirmed his tail is broken, (about 5cm from the tip) She has recommended that we have his tail docked. I just hate the thought. I heard that if the tail is broken at the tip it will usually heal itself. I am living in Turkey and sometimes i wonder if it's not about making money. Do you think she is giving us the right advice.???

Hi, I am a Cocker Spaniel owner and breeder. I always have my dogs tails docked before they are three days old. cocker Spaniels are working dogs and tails and dewclaws are in the way for their activity levels. Yes, have his tail docked! Your vet is right on the money with this one. Check out my website if you don't know what a cocker looks like with their tail docked. Good Luck!

you should take your canines to the vet on the prompt. they could decide what to do and noone should be able of provide you advice on-line without genuinely seeing your canines's tail. This sounds thanks to extreme to anticipate yet another answer, do it first element interior the morning. except you've 24 hour emergency animal care and can want to have the funds for it, flow now. For destiny events, you should evaluate an optimal well-being plan at Banfield puppy health facility accessible in any respect or maximum Petsmart shops. they could certainly help shrink the prices because you get huge savings on the medical interest your animal needs on an favourite or emergency foundation. The vet shouldn't act like its a huge deal in the experience that they did not see it. in the experience that they don't imagine its an effective theory, its time to get a 2d opinion and to jot down a letter to the more beneficial effectual agency bureau.

Yes, have the surgery done. The same things happened to one of our dogs. They only removed a very small portion of the tail, and it healed nicely. You couldn't even tell it was shorter than a normal tail for his breed (dachshund). With his pain meds and antibiotics, he was back to his old self in no time.

yes i think you should have it docked, becouse it can be health haszerd to your dog. i had a cat and my horse stepped on her tail and i took it to the vet and he said that it might come back and it might not come back . then he said i should think about haveing it docked and i said no. well few weeks later i had to put her down becouse she had buggys that were eating her from the inside out. and thats why you should have your dogs tail docked that way he wont go through what my cat had to go through.

Your Vet is not about making money in this case.
The break most likely will not heal to the extent that it was prior to when it broke.
Docking about 5cm is not going to change the dogs appearance a great deal and it will prevent the dog from having any pain at a later date due to the crocked broken section.

Theres nothing wrong with having its tail docked. Most cocker spaniels have their tails docked...if you want to leave it then do so but its tail could become deformed.

If your dog's tail has a minor injury, i think it is not necessary to dock it. But if it is a serious injury, you should dock it. There is a case here http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hushpuppy/tailinjury.htm
