If you want to learn French look for "French In A Box", most libraries have this on cassette and CD and it is a great learning tool. It teaches you the basics of conversatoinal French as well as the basics of reading and writing it. They have them for almost every language including Italian, Greek , Spanish and Arabic.

I doubt it is the best but Before You Know It has a free download for several different languages.

I don't think anyone in their right minds would make a french language teaching program and let you download it.

However, there are some sites you can go to.

Rosetta Stone is not free, but you can find it on Kazaa for free.
