Thank you for taking in a stray cat. To insure that she doesn't get pregnant and you go through all this again, keep her indoors until she is spayed. You need to wait for the milk glands to go back down, can be 4 to 6 or more weeks after the kittens are weaned and gone from the home, otherwise she will still allow them to nurse. It is more expensive if the glands are swollen due to taking more time not to cut all the blood vessels that show up while nursing. Also it is more expensive if they are in heat, or pregnant due to the uterus being swollen and every thing has to be double or triple tied off from the normal surgery.

And you really are a good person for rescuing snakes and bearded dragons. If they are raised their whole life in a cage and have never had a chance to learn to fend for themselves they would die in a short time. Good luck.

Many people who respond here work or volunteer in animal shelters, or for rescue organisations. This time of year (all summer and even early fall) we see kittens and cats come in and many have to be euthanized because there is just not enough space to shelter them till they can be adopted. That's why many of us kinda loose it when we hear of pregnant cats.

Especially when someone comes on and says, "My cat has a kitten stuck in the birth canel. What do I do?" We know this person's cat has no veterinarian, that the cat is probably under one year of age, the mother and kittens will have fleas and/or worms, and will receive no treatment for those deadly parasites.

It gets really tough to take some times -- the ignorance, the lack of responsibility for the cat and for the community (we all pay taxes to support our local shelters and many people donate money for the rescue of homeless animals.)

So thank-you for explaining your story more fully. I hope you can forgive us (though I have never jumped on someone for having a pregnant cat). My heart just sinks, "Oh, no. Not another one."

I just kind of got in on the first part, but if you are willing to rescue, that's good enough for me!Again, I suggest that if you are willing to take in strays, contact the feral kitty program, they will help you with food, litter and even help you post kittens on their website.Good luck with your rescue, and God bless, because I feel the breeders are the irresponsible pet owners, there is absolutely no reason in this world to be breeding cats or dogs! Enough is enough!

I would think you could have her spayed anytime after she is done nursing her babies. Ask your vet. I don't think snakes need to be rescued and have no clue what a bearded dragon is. You were great for taking in a pregnant cat! :o)

A female cat who has had kittens shouldn't be spayed until her mammary glands ("breasts") return to their normal size. This typically takes about a month to six weeks after she stops breast feeding the kittens. This allows for her hormone levels to return to the normal (non-pregnant) state.

We were told by our vet that they can in fact still fall pregnant when nursing and that removal of the impregnated uterus was much more expensive than one that isn't, not sure why the op is the same so if you are worried do not let her out till its done.

Congrats on the babies. She can be spayed just as soon as the kids can go to the dish and eat. If you don't do it then, she will be in heat again as soon as they stop nursing completely.

Thanks for the help with stray cats.
