We are a family of 4 (kids ages 5 & 6 at time of cruise) and we'll be travelling the Western Mediterranian on the Costa Fortuna. Thanks!!!!!

Perhaps I didn't make it clear exactly where we are going. Our ports of call will be Savona (Italy), Naples (Italy), Palermo (Sicily), Tunis (Tunisia), Mallorca (Spain), Barcelona (Spain), and Marseille (France). Since we're currently living in Germany, I don't think any of these places would be more dangerous then any other Western European City.

Besides, I'm not sure which map you were looking at, but according to mine...the Black Sea is to the East and the Red Sea is to the South, both much further East than the cruise takes us.

Obviously John L flunked geography and has not cruised very often.

The itinerary you have for the W. Med is usually very safe. If there is a security issue with any of the ports, the cruise line will make an itinerary change and subsitute another destination. I would check with the cruise line to see if they have a children's program on board. If so, I would ask if the program director would make suggestions for shore excursions or sites that would appeal to your children.

I would recommend no shore excursions longer than 6 hours and I would recommend setting up private car tours in the ports vs. the cruise lines bus tours. With four of you a private car & driver will probably be comparable to the cruise lines' bus tour. The car allows you to move at your own pace and stop regularly for the children. The driver can do the same type of tour as on the bus or, if you find something that interests the children, he can take you there and you can spend as much or as little time there as you'd like.

In Barcelona I would recommend a visit to the Spanish Villages and also the tram ride to see the city. The tram ride is located right at the port and takes you up to an observation tower. The Sagrada Familia Church is also interesting.

Please feel free to email me and I can give you the name of a company that can provide a car & driver in these ports.

We did a Mediterranian cruise last October but we did not do all of the stops you have. We cruised out of Barcelona and I would recommend seeing Gaudie's church Segradia Familia and also Los Rambles, an opean air market that runs several blocks through the city.

In Naples we went to Pompeii and it was a great tour. All of our other port stops were in Rome, Florence, and 3 in Greese.

Check with Costa cruise line website. They probably have some excursions you can sign up for before you go so you'll be booked in.
