I haven't had one before figured this would be a good middle the road price.

What features should I look for, and what brand?

You have dozens to choose from. Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Panasonic, Sony all make highly rated digital cameras. To make the best choice you need to narrow the selection down to the features (eg., zoom, camera size, image stabilization, picture quality, etc) that are most important to you. A couple web sites have buying guides that allow you to check off the price and features that are important to you and then show you recommendations along with their review of the cameras. A good web site to do this search is www.dpreview.com. Click on their Buying Guide tab and then select Features Search.
This is how I selected my purchase of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 which I think is an awesome camera for around $300. Figure on spending another $100 more for a few essential accessories like memory card, carrying case & spare battery.
Good camera hunting!!

Try to look for Megapixel and Optical zoom. Those are the most highly needed features.

I suggest a Kodak.
