If you are thinking about joining the Household Cavalry as an officer, then maybe because most of our officers are upper class, and i think they are doing it as an inheritance thing. I am a LCpl in the Household Cavalry and i am a working class citizen from Birmingham. So it depends what you are joining as. When you go to Sandhurst as an officer you have to be chosen. So if they chose you it is because you are good enough.

I am the wife of a British Army Officer and I can spot a Household Cavalry Officer across a room, even if they are in Civvies. He is the one who one would describe as 'an awfully nice Chap' with a wife named Camilla. My husband is a brilliant man. He has a First Class degree, Went to Staff College, and is a Senior Officer in a demanding field but he would never have got in to the Household Cavalry. Why? because he went to a State School!

No just like any branch of the armed forces you can request an attachment to the Household Cavalry and you don't even have to be able to ride a horse or have any experiences with horses. There was a BBC programme last year that followed a group of recruits through basic training and up to their first official royal engagement and some of those came from "lower class" backgrounds. Remeber they not only form the Royal body guard but have an armoured role, tanks, in the regular army.

I spent 24 years in the British Army. To answer your question... for the officers of the Regiment... most certainly!

Just to be accurate, Devon Lad, it's 'cavalry', and I don't think so.
Have a look at their website:

Well, its supposed to be open to any soldier, but its still a very elite club. Besides, they aren't a fighting regiment, so all this crap about Harry and William wanting to join it is a load of tosh.
