I've got news for you, you will only have to wait until the year 2012 to find out, or so Yahoo Answers keep on telling us. Personally I'm rather disappointed as I live in England and I am rather looking forward to the 2012 Olympics.

We are the cause of a mass extinction which is happening now.

Actually, Humans are not the cause, but the nature of our civilisation is.
We could alter our civilisation to stop the extinction, or our civilisation will be brought down in some way by the environmental damage we are causing.
If that happens, humans will survive, perhaps a few percent, but they will be reduced to a hunter gatherer type of existence.

Civilisation will then emerge again in a thousand years maybe, as nature recovers, but with a much lower potential for damage, because we have used up most of the easily available energy and mineral resources.

Forget travelling to another planet. Do the sums on how much energy that would require, and work out how many people could actually leave the earth. And would it really satisfy us?

The mass extinction is going on right now. The rate of extinction that has been going on since the emergence of the modern Homo Sapiens some 50,000 years ago and especially since the population explosion started some hundred years ago is alarming.

I think human will survive it, though. Most of the habitat destruction takes place in rain forests, mangroves etc. which are not important to humanity as such, although some areas will be turned into deserts.

Global warming may cause coastal cities to get flooded and may make the tropics too hot for humans to live there. But it will also make some areas, like parts of Canada and Siberia, inhabitable for a larger habitat than they host today.

Humans have proven themselves to be resilient. Surviving
glacial Ice Ages, and so forth. The next disaster is said to a
shift of the earths axis. Presumed to be happening already.
This worldwide disaster will put humanity at each others
throats. Literally, brother against brother, fighting for bare
necessities like food.
The meek will inherit the earth. Eventually, people will have enough to do, just to survive, and will stop killing each other,
and a time of peace will come.
Then, after humans multiply, and spread out. They will start
fighting over things again. (Satan released for a time).
It's all in Scripture, and makes perfect sense, if one looks at
it logically.

Events and timings of such a mammoth proportion cannot be predicted precisely. Even if there were one at that time, we won't be there to witness.Mass extinction does not mean no survival at all.
