I'm actually looking for a freeware database or something like that, because the alternative is Excel and I'm not hot on that and I'd like it to be relatively painless and painstaking.

Use the database in Open Office. This is a free proggrame.

Open Office has an extremely good free to use and distribute product at http://www.openoffice.org

It contains programmes fully functional in Word-processing, Database, Spreadsheets, Drawing and Presentation. It looks and feels like Microsoft Office and can even make PDF's

I can't help you here, I'm something of an Adrian Monk character in that every song on every CD and the old vinyl I have is stored in my grey matter. I don't have an mp3 player. If I need to listen to music, and I'm out of the house, I just pull that file out of the little draw in my head, and press "play". Every nuance, every incidental comes out in my head. I may be slightly on the autistic spectrum there, I have a play-along with anything guitar technique.

Have a look at mysql.

It might be a bit over the top for what you want but it's really powerful if you choose to develop it any futher.

On www.download.com, you can get a freeware package called Mega Disc 1.1, which allows you to manage your cd collection.

Hope that helps!
