We have bred pitbulls in the past and our beagle has also had puppies. I know there are different situations that may come up with different breeds and each individual dog. Our experiences have been good though, and over all, the mother dog seems to take care of things on her own. When the pups do come out, she should eat the sac that is surrounding them off within a real short period of time and lick the pup to stimulate it. If she leaves the pup in the sac, it could die, so if she was to not remove it for some reason, you would want to do that. Hopefully she will just do well on her own!!! Best of luck to you & new puppies!

There is far too much information for us to be able to put here, buy the book thats been recommended as soon as possible.
She needs a nest box inside a den, and the whole thing should be in a playpen to stop the pups wandering off when they're older. Plus they need to be in a quiet room out of the way.
You need to think about collecting newspapers now so you have enough for the 8 weeks that you'll have the pups, and start putting money aside for the puppy food.

My dog had puppies back in the eighties when I was about ten, so I do have a rough idea of what to do as I was on hand to help my Dad when Gillie birthed.
The best thing is that the mother is kept warm and quiet and out of the way of noise and people. Invest in some heat lamps for her and the puppies and put loads of loose wood shavings and paper down in a wooden box for mum if you can. This will help her to settle and create a nest for herself as she is broody. Also, let her have something familiar like a blanket from her bed or a toy.
Mum should be given supplements with her food, I do know that, but it's better if you check with the vet which ones.
When Mum's in labour, she will start breathing very rapidly just as we do. When she pushes the puppy out, it will be in a mebranous sack that usually Mum licks away, you can then help her by rubbing some of the puppies for her to get this off as she will no doubt be exhausted and put the puppy straight on her to suckle. She will do the rest. Just remember to keep her and her puppies warm at all times. Hope this helps you!

Hi.. worked at a vets for 2 years... Staffies, have large heads, and due to the poor breeding habbit trying to make the heads larger, and larger, it is often difficult for this tye of dog to give birth.
I would sugest informing your vet of the pregnancy, take the dog to be checked out. Make sure your dog doesnt have a heart murmour, lots do, eg giving birt will kill it. Once shes been checked as fit, take the dog home, personally, if it was mine, i would get the back of my car ready, and when she started, get her into it, and wait outside the vets for her to have the pups.
This way you avoid the vet bills, but should your dog require a csection (£800 ish) or you have to make the descision to loose the pups or the dog, at least you will be close..
Remember, all the puppies will need lots of vaccinations, and fleaing, and you can only get this done at the vet. You shouldnt let the puppies out of the house, until they have finished their vaccines.

Read up on birthing puppies so that you don't feel too helpless.
But generally you can leave it all to the Mum,its amazing how they know what to do. Don't touch the puppies to early ,tell the "Mum"
that she is a good girl and very clever ! Good luck enjoy !

hi, just look up vet and dog birth sites on net, get a book from library or talk to your local vet. Remember to keep calm as your loved one will feed on your emotions. Keep her warm and comfortable. Lots of pats and praise. If any sign of struggle or she is taking a long time, take her straight to the vet....no matter what time of day or night! Good luck and remember to enjoy the experience, nature usually knows best!
