its to stop people from accidently over writing data thats on the disk. It makes it read only so nothing else ca be written to it. I also think at one point it may have been useful for say when a computer had a virus and you didnt want it to be spread to your disk this would stop it.

It prevents overwriting any data or erasing any data.

The floppy drive has a mechanism inside that pushed down if the tab is in place. If there is a tab covering the hole, then you can save your data and/or erase(delete) data; if there is no tab covering the hole, then you can't write nor can you erase it. The hole makes it a read-only disk.

To secure your information. Its a Read/Write setting. The drive checks if the tab is present if so it can write information.

The reason to use a physical tab is you can toggle it, or in the case of extreme data remove the tab.

This helps prevent accidental overwriting of information. Other media that uses this method is VHS tapes.

To prevent accidentally erasing the data on the disk. It doesn't protect the disk from damage.
