The driving standards agency has to be satisfied that you can competently drive a motor vehicle, thus the two part driving test. Until you pass both of these you cannot drive without L plates and a driver of 21 years or older and has held a full driving licence for at least three years for the catagory of vehicle that you intend to drive, sitting in the vehicle with you. (Not necessarily the same person(i.e. your mentor)). Having passed a test of competency, you would have reached the minimum standard for driving, your driving skills improve with experience.
Let me reverse this on you. If a loved one say a child of yours was killed/severely injured by a driver who had not passed at test of competency and was driving without supervision or L plates, what would you say or do to that person? I think that you would be in a bit of an angry state and probably would want to injure the person for not having supervision or L plates. The same situation could befall you if you drove without supervision or L plates.
On public roads there are no circumstances in which you could drive without supervision or L plates. On private land you can drive what you want as you will not be endangering anyone else (Unless you have someone else with you) But usually you would want to pass your driving standards test.
I refer to the red L (not the green L New driver plate)
I do not specifically refer to cars here as this is the standard for those with a full licence driving under provisional circumstances for another catagory of vehicle (i.e. HGV) is the same for those who have never driven before or passed any competency test in a vehicle (motorcycles have different rules, and a full licence for a motorcycle only allows for provisional licence conditions when you wish to drive a car etc).

Under no circumstance!!!!!
If you did that, you'd be "driving other than in accordance with a driving licence"....you'd get done for not displaying "L" plates...and also your insurance will not cover you. As you're a learner...you're looking at probably gaining 6 points or more on your licence....as a result you will lose your licence for a period of time.
Who says you can drive very well??? We all think we can...but accidents still happen!!!!!
There is a possibility that the police will get your car impounded...and it will cost you an arm and a leg to get the car back.....oh yeah...and the court costs and fines!!!
Reading some of the "advice" given here....I have to put one straight in saying that the only person that CAN sit with you is someone who is 21 years of age or over...that has held a full UK driving licence for no less than 3 years!!!

I'm afraid it's illegal for you to drive the car either unaccompanied or without L plates if you only hold a provisional licence, if you're caught, you'd be looking at points on your licence before you even got it. Technically there would be some circumstances where you could get away with it if caught, but it'd have to be a VERY good reason.

You can have anyone to mentor you who has held a license for a minimum of 3 Years and over 21 years of age. So you'll have no excuse. In the eyes of the law, you will be driving un-insured, without a license. This results in a ban, fine or even Jail. You need to display the L plates until the day you pass your test.

Not on your own you must be supervised by someone who has been driving for at least 3 years and min age of 21.
If you get caught you will be banned and fined for no insurance - easier to wait til your instructor gets back from hols

you can't, it is illegal to drive without a qualified driver with you in any circumstances. If caught you will get points, and if you have an accident you will find that the insurance in invalidated as you are not a qualified driver.
