Ankle sprains can be worse than a break and take lonegr to heal. I had one that bothered me for six months.

If you truly cannot bear weight on that ankle (not because of pain, but because it's unstable and won't hold you up), then you need to have it re-evaluated now.

Sprains can be very serious. You may have torn or ruptured a tendon or ligament in your ankle...and this would not necessarily show up on an Xray. Xrays only show whether a bone is broken. There are other tests to show the integrity of your connective tissues.

If you cannot bear weight because of pain, then you need to stay off of it for a few days. Elevate it. Apply ice packs for 20 minutes on (and 1 hour off) several times per day. Wrap it with a supportive ace wrap or use an air-cast splint (you can buy these at the drugstore) when you do walk. You can also try an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen for discomfort. Make certain you follow all package directions and check with your doctor before taking it if you've never had Ibuprofen before.

Although it may hurt for several weeks, if you still can't bear weight because pain is so severe after staying off of it for a few days, then get back in to the doctor.

Cannot move it or cannot walk on it?
X-Ray would've showed a break, and probably also would've shown ligament damage. ..that and a physician's inspection probably means.... your nerves shorted out =p ..or you pinched a nerve or whatever, and/or bloodflow is bad.

...if your foot goes cold (abnormal and unlike the other foot) ..then probably call the doctor's office and notify them and ask for advice. Other than that, if it's not in excessive pain when you're not putting weight on it, ..keep weight off of it, preferably keep it above the level of the heart, and if you can, put a cold compress (ice with a medium, like cloth, so as not to ..like.. frostburn your skin) on it for 10-15 minutes at a time ..2 or 3 times an hour. ..something like that.

Bruising might not show up yet. Bruises are weird that way (and, ..additionally, bruises, or contusions, ..become visible when the blood has collected to the damaged blood vessels. especially in extremities or if you have poor circulation, it might be a little slow)

as is the yahoo answers mantra, check with a real doctor

best of luck

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

You may have torn ligaments...that can be just as bad. Call the doctor and get guidelines on how long it should feel this way before you do something besides wait. Also, if he did not set you up with crutches and you do not have any...ask for him to help you with that!

It just needs rest. If the X-ray didn't show anything broken, you're OK.
