The problem is that people look to present and past prices for making purchase judgments. Fuel is going to get far more expensive than it is now, and people should be encouraged, even forced, to economize with fuel-efficient cars and houses.
But they aren't.
In Britain, gasoline is $8 a gallon, mostly tax. Soon it will be $8 a gallon in the USA, tax or not. And proportionately more in Europe.

Why would the price of cigarettes go up? Last time I checked cigarettes were not made from oil, they were made from tobacco. The price of gas goes up because the price of oil goes up. Since gas is made from oil then when the price of oil goes up so does the price of gas.

YES YES YES!!! Cigarettes should be like 10 or 15 dollars a pack. That way more people would have to quit & not have to die because of lung cancer.

I think the cost of expensive stuff should be taxed at a higher rate than the lesser cost neccessary item. For example, I think the sales tax on a jacket should be 2 persent, but if that jacket cost $1000, I say they should be taxed 10%. Just a thought

They have. People still buy them. Just like we do gas. Just one of those things. Supply & Demand.
