He is 9 months old. I recently got a job, and he had to be home alone for much of the day. He never was a chewer or anything like that, so we let him have free run of the house. Well one day he got bored and chewed up my rug. He swallowed about 4 feet of carpet and it caused a blockage in his small intestine. He also chewed up his frisbee. The pieces of plastic got caught in the carpet and it ended up tearing the lining of his intestine, also causing infection, and inflammation. Anyway...since he's been home ( he spent 7 days with the vet) I've been doing what she told me, but now he's trying to eat every piece of other dog poop he can find. He has NEVER been interested in other dog poop before. I would ask the vet, but we went on the economy since it was an emergency. And she doesn't know enough english words to explain it to me. So...does anyone know why dogs eat poop? Sorry for the long drawn out details...........

The main theory is that dogs eat poop because before being domesticated they would do it to get as main nutrients as possible. It is called coprophagia. They sell tablets in pet stores/walmart that helps. Also, I would HIGHLY recommend looking into doggie day care for your gr, even if it is once or twice a week. Or you can get another dog for your golden to play with. I have a gr puppy the same age and she is destructive as well if someone is not home.

STOP your dog grom eating poop. You don't know what disease, infection, or parasite those other dogs who have pooped have. That is one of the most common way for parasites to spread. Make sure he is dewormed. Some people believe that when a dog starts eating poop, there is a vitamen/mineral dificiancy. Try putting him on a mulitvitamine. It possible that you will have to train him not to eat poop, because now he's started he thinks its a fun thing, a head halti will be easies, because you will have his head the whole walk making it easier for you to prevent him putting poop in his mouth. Encourage his obiedence training to take his mind off his new dirty addiction, with treats and re-enforcing his basic commands. Finally if this doesn't stop him, you might want to take him to the vet again (maybe not on the economy - one that speaks english) and have them run a blood test just to test his vital organs and make sure every thing is going like its supposed to and he isn't defecient ( in regards to his organs not properly processing the vitmins and minerals) Esp. since the intestines is where the majority of the nutritional absorption is done. Good luck

my dog used to eat poop but only his own if the other dogs are yours try putting meat tenderizer in all of their food. (my vet told me) they like to eat it but not after it has been digested they hate the smell the 2nd time around. if the other dogs arent yours ask the other dogs owners to get a pooper scooper and pick up after their pet!

This is a common thing for Golden Retrievers, mine did this also. Maybe it smells good to him, or maybe his tummy still doesn't feel well, so he's trying to help himself by doing this. I guess it's the same thing by eating grass.

don't know, but you need to invest in a dog kennel for your home. they sell them in all sizes and have one appropriate for your sized pet. it contains the pet safely so the pet can't do damage to things around the home or itself.
