Mexcal is a type of tequila there r four basic types Reposado, agave, anejo, and mexcal if you look for mexcal youll see it always has a worm in the bottle. They do this to keep with and old tradition which is base on hallucinating. (The old school High) I dont know why but hopefully that helps..

Tequilla does not have a worm. Where as Mescal does. Mescal is made from an agave plant. The process starts in the agave fields where the agave (or maguey) plant takes 7 to 9 years to grow to maturity. When the individual plant is mature the spiny leaves are cut off to harvest the heart of the succulent. The hearts are taken to the distillery where they are cooked either in an underground pit with oak logs or steamed in a brick oven. The cooking takes 3 to 6 days and converts the starches into sugar. The now sweetened hearts are mashed and pressed and are then ready to be fermented. Once fermented the juice is distilled in small artisanal stills. Then a slow cooking in the second distillation ensures the best-flavored mescal. There is nothing else needed in making pure mescal. Each batch of maguey is individually processed. The mescal is then bottled and aged for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years.

Tequila and the Worm. Many of those reading probably already know this, but tequila never has a worm in it. Well, except maybe a few novelty brands. The association of Mexican liquor and worms actually comes from the parent group of tequila, mescal. Properly defined, mescal is any liquor fermented from the agave plant. Tequila is any mescal distilled entirely from the blue agave and produced in the Tequila region of Mexico. Much like champagne, tequila is simply a regional instance of a larger type of booze. The worm comes from a mostly unrelated mescal, and was not put in the bottle so you could prove how tough you are. The worm was used to prove that the liquor in the bottle was the strength that the salesman was telling you. If the booze had been cut with water, the worm would still be alive. If you follow the logic, the booze in the bottle is strong enough to kill a worm. Makes you want to drink a whole bunch, doesn’t it?

I don't know what Mescal is but I think there was only one brand of Tequila that came with a worm in the bottle and I don't know if they even do that anymore. The kind of Tequilas I've seen do not have worms in the bottle.

Mescal is a brand of Tequila, I did my fair share of shots down in TJ, San Luis, Algodones, Rocky Point, Ensanada, San Felipe etc.. and it had a worm. One of the girls I used to date swallowed the worm and about 10 minutes later she was running up and down the beach naked. Not sure if it was the worm or the fact that she drank 8 shots. I do know she was in desperate need of a tic tac.

Yes there are worms in tequilla Mezcal is a Mexican distilled spirit made from the agave plant. There are many different types of agaves, and each produces a slightly different mezcal. Agave is part of the Agavaceae family, also called maguey. While Tequila is a mezcal made only from the blue agave plant in the region around Tequila, Jalisco, spirits labeled "Mezcal" are often made using other agave plants.

If Tequilla has a worm in it, it's a novelty thing. It's not good tequila.
