Paul ~
Getting hit in the head with or without a headgear is never good, it's compareable to this, put a hardboiled egg in a glass of water and shake the glass as hard and fast as you can....cracks on the shell right? Now take another hardboiled egg out in another glass filled with water, but this time rap a wash cloth around the glass and shake it as hard and fast as you can.......same thing right? The purpose of a headgear in to give you some protection from a blows impact but the majority of it's purpose is to kep you from getting cut in the gym. Is Amatuer boxing safe? Absolutely! There are more Emergency room visits per year from Skateboaders, Football, Basketball and Horse back riding than amatuer boxing. There are more deaths per year in Horse back riding than amatuer boxing. About ten years ago there was a study conducted in England in which they studied ten young men over a years period five attended a boxing academy on a regular basis and five were just your average teenagers, after the years time they gave then ten youths Math, Reading and a list of general questions, the youg men that didn't box scored higher on their test than the ones that did. Now is this overwhelming evidence that amatuer boxing is bad, ABSOLUTELY not, but it does show there might be a problem with the effects of constant blows to the head. I've been boxing since the age of 9 and I had well over a 100 amatuer boxing matches and I realized and knew that each time I put on a pair of gloves what the risk were, every fighter does amatuer or Pro. Boxing has been one of the greater joys in my life and it has helped many of unfortunate kids throughout the country and world see things and experience hings they normally wouldn't without their amatuer boxing programs. Thanks for a great question!

If you're so worry about affects from boxing then you should stay out.

This thing is still pretty much a mystery to doctors. Many doctors cannot even explain why some boxer come out better and well off while some come off really bad like Ali.

There's still many many things we don't know about human body and anatomy system.
