I have based my beliefs on life experiences and many years of religious study. It wasn't until a year ago that I started using the term "Pagan" to describe who I am. I don't have dogma or orthodoxy to follow, but I believe in altruism.
I have faith in that there is a Mysterious Tremendum, humans have eternal souls, and there is an afterlife. These are common themes found in most religions.
I don't think it matters what way people go regarding faith. If a person learns about a path that she or he thinks could lead to a better life and peace, then that person should follow it! I personally don't think it matters what religion we choose as long as we strive to improve the lives of others and don't cause any harm.

I was raised in a home where we attended church, specifically a Southern Baptist church. My mother is a Christian and my dad 'claims' to be one. So, as any other Southern Baptist, I learned that I was lost and needed a savior and accepted Jesus as my savior when I was 9 years old (I'm 58 now).
When I got to be about 16 or so I started wanting to rebel and 'do my own thing'. So after I got out of high school I REALLY went wild, began drinking, partying, smoking, doing pot and pills, just living wild. I got married, had two kids, still lived a partying life until about 1980. God had been 'dealing with me' in my heart and drawing me back to Himself for a couple of years prior and in '80 He really made it personal and as a result I came back to Him (re-dedicated my life).
Since then my husband did the same and we completely changed our lives and the way we live. We are completely sold out to God and live as godly a life as we possibly can. We attend a Non-Denominational church now too. We've each lived BOTH ways.......in relationship with God and Jesus and OUT of relationship with God and Jesus. We MUCH prefer the latter!
As children we were both raised in church so you could say that our faith was pretty much 'chosen for us'. But having turned away from God (back slidden) and then having returned to Him and now being radical in our faith, you could say that we CHOOSE our way of living BASED on our faith, as taught to us in the Bible, NOT by how we think people should live. We simply KNOW it's the best way TO live!
I hope that explains it at least a LITTLE clearly! ;o)

I chose my path based on what I believed based on my own experiences in the world and what fit those experiences best. Strangely, a lot of this came from reading up on quantum mechanics and Carl Jung...anyway, once I had concluded that the world is generally chaotic and things remain "normal" is because the highest probability usually wins out, along with the potent force of the human mind, I ended up in chaos magic. I also keep in a healthy dose of Buddhism (thought I don't consider myself one, per se) because their beliefs are similar but add in the concept of karma, making it all actually mean something more than random chaos.

To begin with, I wouldn't say I "chose" my faith (or lack thereof, since I'm an unbeliever). I didn't choose it. It chose me, as it were. I have a set of principles and values, and those principles and values made me who I am, including my total incompatibility with the concept of a mysterious superior being.
Now, of course my beliefs and my position on religion are in total agreement with my general way of living. I'd say the same happens with every person.

Yes - I studied most of the beliefs that are around including Satanism. I have a fairly good knowledge on all beliefs. Then after careful consideration I have decided which one is correct and is the truth. What I believe is amazing ! I still haven't finished studying all of it !

Other way around...
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
For scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm
Cordially,
John
