Back when phones were new and into the late 1950's no one had their own phone line. It was shared with other people. Strangers. If we picked up the phone and heard someone talking we quickly hung up the phone. And phone calls weren't very frequent because too many people shared the line. And Nope....no one ever made friends with the other people. There were operators that sat at a desk and connected calls by plugging in a connection for the calls. It seems like a long time ago, but actually wasn't. I was born in the 50's and remember party lines very well.

Making a phone call was a big deal. Making a long distance call was like going to the moon. Boy! things sure have changed.
