It estimates the antibody titre to Salmonella typhi, which causes typhoid or enteric fever and S. paratyphi, causing paratyphoid. S. typhi 'O' signifies present infection and 'H' old infection or vaccination. 'Generally, 'O' titre of 1:160 or more is taken as signicant. A serially rising titre is more suggestive of infection.
