I do get upset about people who use the word retarded as an insult. It is not something that highly educated people do, let's put it that way.

The word retarded just means slow in learning and if not used in a mean way there is nothing wrong with it. Also your growth can be retarded and then you are a little person but honestly you are just too sensitive, this is an honest word when used in the proper way.

I use it. The word retard means slow. It doesn't not stand for a person with Downs syndrome. It can be used in many ways but people with a limited amount of knowledge know how to use it only one way and that is to insult people.

I got a kick out of the CSI Episode where Grishom investigates a man who killed some poor guy with Down's Syndrome.
The guy calls the kid "retarded" and Grishom replies cooly with the real definiton of the word: "To delay, or to hold back."
Then, he proceeds to tell the suspect,
"It looks like your life is about to become seriously retarded," as he cuffs him and leads him off to jail.
Love those "Gruesome Grishom" one-liners.

Ignorance is dangerous--people should get a clue and stop being cruel to others who are different.

Agreed. I can't stand it either. I think its very rude and ignorant. I think some people when they say it don't realize that even though you not talking about a particular person at that moment saying things like "This computer is so frick'n Retarded" is still just as bad. Whats sad is that its used without even thinking.

I would not use these adjectives . I would say that they do not know what the world can do ; they are not acquainted with high things ; they will learn as they grow older. That is the beauty of Yahoo Answers and Questions. You learn a lot , things you never knew before.

No, not at all. I understand if you say it to someone with a disability, but when your around your friends saying "this is retarded" i find no offence to it.

Yes, it is upsetting, but what can you do? The usage of the word is inevitable. Thus, we must ignore it, and go on with life.
