My throat has been sore for 8 days and it is swollen. It looks to me like it's staying about the same. I went to the doctor and they took a strep and a mono test and both came back negative. I have had mono in the past, about 4 years ago. I don't have any other real symptoms that I can see anyway, I had problems sleeping for a little bit, and in the beginning of the week I had alot of phlegm and it was yellow. Now just an occasional cough, just about normal energy level, no other real symptoms though. I'm just getting worried since it's lasting longer than 4 days as normal. No allergies that I know of either.

The doctor gave me a prescription to Prilosec because she thought it might be acid reflux, but I don't have heart burn, so I'm not really sure about that.

Anyone have any help for me?

The thing about the phlegm is that there isn't any. I can breathe clearly through my nose, I don't feel any drainage going on. Just a swollen throat and it involves my whole throat from what I can see. It also happened within an hour last Friday. I think it might have come from an airplane that I came back from California in.

From what you're telling it sounds like an inflammation in your throat (aka pharyngitis). The most common cause for that is strep., but as your tests came back negative it probably wasn't the cause. Other causes can be other bacteria or viruses. From what you say about yellow phlegm it sounds more like a bacterial infection rather than viral.

Also from what you're saying it sounds like you're on your way to recovery, even though it's been lasting.

In any case, you should go see your doctor and ask for antibiotics. The test for detection of strep. is only positive in 80-85% of the cases and you might still be infected with strep., the complications of which might be more severe. And even if it's some other bacteria, it would help eradicate it.

Your doctor is a silly person for giving Prilosec like that o.O

It's actually increasingly common for strep and mono to come back negative, ..at least on the first run through.
I'm assuming, based on the energy level issue, it's not mono. But then there are mild strains.

Yellow or green phlegm does tend to be a sign of infection. Keep in mind, the body ups the mucous production whenever it feels like it. The colour to it bothers me a bit, though. A cough, especially a non-persistent one, is probably just discomfort in your throat.

My suggestion is ...1, stay away from hot drinks with milk in them... while the heat will soothe soreness ..the end effect will probably not be good. 2, ask for another strep test if you can afford it. It's not all that uncommon for it to come back ridiculously positive, even 3 days after the first test. It's not the most robust system.

feel better soon

maybe (and only maybe) you've developed an allergy with a sinusitus, bronchitis combo platter. that would explain the sore throat and the swollen glands. the phlegm could be the bronchitis which can range in color from green to yellow to a weird coppery color.

i'm in no way a physician, but i've had all of this and that's what it turned out to be. i wound up having to go to an ororhinolaryngologist before someone could give me some answers.

if you even suspect this is tonsillitis (and even if you don't), find another doctor who can properly diagnose you. you may just end up with antibiotics, but if it's more serious, you definitely need to make sure.

Tonsilitis is where your tonsils, located in the back of your throat get red and swollen. Sometimes people have lots of problems with thees and have to have it removed. I had mine taken out when I was 7. The older you get the harder it is on a person to have their tonsils removed. My dad had his taken out in his 40's and it was very hard on him. Tonsilitis is not a cold or any other bad thing.

yellow and green phlem is usually an indication of an infection. Perhaps you should get another doctor to look at you for second opinion cuase i think you should be on some kind of antibiotics.

If it persists keep on your doc even if it is nothing. I ignored the symptoms and it was to late.
