A good question that made me go to the dictionary and look up the word metaphor to be sure of my opinion or my view. Here is what I found in the Yahoo Ref Dictionary: A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another;
One thing conceived as representing another; a symbol:
I see two key words in those stated definitions which for me are "ordinarily" and "conceived". With these I must proceed with caution in forming a conclusion for these words are warnings to me. When is it that ordinarily for one is always the same as it is for another when all humankind is unique in form, mind sets and experiences? How can one know what is conceived in the mind of another until it is revealed or manifested in full and understood exactly in the same way by both if it is only two in a conversation? Patches0528 has a good point in this area.
When you used the word metaphors I am not really sure of your point. I do study a lot in the Bible. I find one must not stop with one view. Likewise I see that the innate nature in most everything is the center of focus and thus the pure and complete innate nature of each and every noun in the bible must be considered.
Fire is used to destroy, cook, improve, change, give light, increase, decrease, etc., etc. so I find it hard to see only one word in "hated" as the only point to consider.
I must ask you a simple question. My Bible says God is Love. Is he two-fold and also hate. Can God hate or is the word hate declared in the Bible so humankind can understand a little of who, what, and why God is truly God and why he is pure love? Can both love and hate be within the same package when it comes to a Pure such as My God? Is this not like saying is God both good and evil if one sees both love and hate in God?
I know this is just my thoughts and my opinion. All I can say is the question did give me some thoughts and I do like that so thanks for it. Likewise I did appreciate many of the answers. For me its great here and plenty of stuff to learn from. I will be a steady customer here besides its free Lol.

Well fire could also be a few other metaphors for other things depending on what religion and psychological stance you're coming from. Maybe you should do more explaining in a question before you assume everyone should know what you are talking about. For instance, to me that inner fire means something completely different.

my question is then, why did god/jesus teach in so many metaphors?
you are obviously onto something, after all, several thousand years, and many thousands of biblical "experts" later and people are still trying to interpret the bible...though everyone claims that they understand it, it is after all always the other fellow who does not.
jesus even claimed he used metaphors because it was easier for people to understand, but then he goes on and berates his disciples when they don't get his teachings...now if his main twelve don't get it, maybe its not working to teach that way?
metaphors can be tricky though...
but it makes sense that alot of people don't get them on here since they also are not understanding them in the bible, hence all the churches, ministers, priests, and pastors trying to explain the same passages over and over again in different ways since the bible was written.

because religion and spirituality are not prcatical. If they were to accept (understand) metaphors then they could not be said to be in religious or spirituality section.

Yeah, it has other metaphors, I thought you meant passion or the will to fight. I guess the answer would be by removing ignorance and intolerance.

With some exceptions, most of the religious types here are not the brightest ones around!
No sense of humor and are too literal.
