Well, the primary symptom of insomnia is not sleeping at night. This could be due to stress or changes in your biorhythm. Insomnia can't only result from depression. I work nights during the summer (typically get to bed around 6-9am) and have murderous insomnia for the entire month of september until my body readjusts itself to sleeping when it's dark outside.
If you can't sleep at night and you dont know why, you probably have insomnia. The OTC sleeping pills on the market work just fine but make sure you have 8 hrs to give to sleeping. You can get even better stuff if you visit a doctor.

You know you have insomnia if you can't fall asleep at night. Insomnia may or may not be a symptom of depression.
However, sometimes insomnia could be a circadian rhythm disorder. Your biological clock is out of sync. It happens to travelers, airline pilots, night shift workers, or people who just have their sleep schedule disturbed. Check out the link.
