You cannot get rid of the recycle bin from the desktop, but you can hide your desktop icons.

right click on the desktop
arrange icons by
uncheck . show desktop items

Right click the mouse once while on the recycle bin icon and it will bring up a list of tasks..hit "delete" and it will take the icon off of your desktop.

There is only one desktop icon you can't get rid of...recycle bin is it.

recycle bin?? you can never get rid off of it. In fact when I first install ed XP, that is the only ikon i could seen on the desktop.
