in the bible it says: Joseph son of David, "do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit." AND "the virgin will be with the child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him imanuel" which means, "god with us."

Good question, and I don't know. What I do know is that any way you look at it, Jesus is a bastard. He was born to Mary, and Mary was not married to anyone. She was betrothed to Joseph. If Joseph was the father, he must have had premarital sex with her, which is wrong according to the Old Testament. Surely the Son of God would not have been born by such sinful means. But if God was the father, that means that he raped Mary (and violated Joseph's property), as I don't recall him at any point asking her permission. Gabriel just comes down and says "Guess what; God screwed you when you weren't paying any attention and now you're going to have his son. Isn't that cool?" What can she say?

Poor Mary.

My personal theory is that Mary was having an affair with some random guy. When she found out she was pregnant, she had to come up with a pretty good excuse to convince Joseph. "It's God's baby" only works once, but I guess it works well. Can't say much against that.

Mary became pregnant by the holy spirit. An angel visited Mary and told her she would give birth to Jesus. So, the miracle was seen that Mary was pregnant instantly. Joseph was her husband, but didn't contribute to the birth. Although, Joseph was also visited by the angel when he was told to flee to Egypt until Herod gave up his mission to kill Jesus as a child.

Holy Spirit.

By the Holy Spirit...Joseph was the human father that Jesus can relate to on earth. Joseph was a descendant of the line of David. From that line will come the messiah...The divinity of Jesus comes from the HS and the humanity comes from Joseph.

From what the scriptures say - The Holy Spirit came upon her. Joseph wasn't there in her fathers house,
they weren't even promised to each other yet.

If you read Matthew, then you'd know. She was impregnated by the Holy Spirit and Joseph is the earthly father who raised Jesus until he took over the work he was sent to do for his real father, God.
