I think that is all you can do at the moment. He sounds pretty bad off. DO NOT give him any human medication, no aspirin, no antihistamine or anything in your medicine chest that might tempt you. Any of this stuff could kill him in 24 hours.
It's so hard to see a beloved pet in pain and I know your impulse is to treat him with something. Don't worry about his not eating. When pets feel bad they do not want or need food. Keep him warm and let him rest quietly.
Doesn't your vet have an answering machine? Most do. Make a call anyway and tell him how badly the kitty is doing. You might get a call back and the vet might agree to see him. It is always worth a try.
I wish I were there as I would treat him with drops of Rescue Remedy to give him ease. This is something you can get at a health foods store in the future. Every animal owner should have it in the house for this type of emergency.
If he had been hit by a car I am sure there would be some blood. So it's good you couldn't find any. Maybe he has just been "roughed up" badly with bruising and some strains.
Will you let us know how he is doing? I will be worrying about him all night. Please email me at Barbcat40@netzero.net and let me know how he is doing.

My first question is this: WHY do you allow your cat to go outside without supervision? Does you cat have the necessary shots to avoid feline diseases?
To answer your question, please allow your cat the time and distance it needs right now. That's not to say to leave it alone. But give it a comofortable and famailar place to stay - perhaps it has already established a place in your home as 'his' ...a closet, under a certain table. He will go where he is most comfortable, and you should let him and leave him alone. Just mMake sure he has plenty of fresh water and dry food. Do not feed him any wet/can food right now - he is nervous and upset, and the wet/canned food may irritate his system. It is highy unlikely he will want to eat anyhow. You may want to place a heating pad on low under a towel in his hiding place, along wtih a small stuffed animal and a wind up alarm clock (without the alarm set) .. this will offer him some assurance that he is ok. Continue to check on him, with soft enduring tones and short, gentle strokes along his spine. This should keep him comfortable until he can see his doctor. As difficult as it may be, right now, doing less than more is the way to go. He will be fine. Just offer assurances of your love for him by keeping him close enough to you that he can see you, but don't smother him ... if you think he needs medical attention ASAP, look in the yellow pages or call 911 and explain you need an afer-hours pet hospital - they will be glad to help you. After this is all over, I truly hope you will get your cat 'fixed' and make it an inside cat - only letting it go out when you are there to supervise him. In spite of what you have heard, cats DO NOT need to be outside at their leisure. It is very dangerous out there for them -- I know, I just finished raising 11 cats - most of whom were feral. Good luck to you.

Did you keep the 2nd cat confined for any time? Or did you just let them both together immediately? I got a 2nd cat and my first cat had a hard time accepting him even after he was kept in a separate room for almost two weeks. They are both neutered. I started feeding them on opposite sides of a closed door so they could get used to the smell of the other cat while they were doing something pleasurable which was eating. Also I gave them cat treats while they were in the same room and not fighting. It took awhile but the first cat will now tolerate the 2nd cat even if they are not the best of friends. I would recommend neutering the new cat.

Even though you may not see a puncture wound, there may be an abcess, which often happens in cat fights. The wound itself heals quickly, but the infection is still trapped underneath. Also, is the pain in the legs on the same side of his body (i.e. right front and right rear)? If so, I would be concerned that he may have been hit by a car.

Lots of TLC, plenty of water, and lots of TLC!
Never in my wildest dreams would I of suspected that two cats fighting could cause one to be hurt so badly.
Last year, before my two male cats (full brothers), were spayed, one of my cats went missing, I looked for him, couldn't find, he did manage to make it back home and in the same description your cat is in.
I thought he was gonna die, I've never seen an animal that bad off, no physical marks, go down as far as he did.
Once was bad enough, for this poor guy it happened twice, once after he was spayed.
During the time of his recoveries we became very close and there is a special bond between us.
Now all of my cats (4) are indoor cats. LOL

Not really a lot you can do other than lay him in a comfortable place and very softly pet him and make sure he knows there is food and water there for him if he wants it, just set it near him. Maybe try to hand feed him a little food but dont force it. Hope this helps, sorry about your cat.

Basically keep him indoors and leave him alone.
Give him fresh food, water, and attention when he wants it. What you have to be careful about is internal bleeding and broken bones so watch him closely over the next few days for any changes in behavior and pain.
If you suspect a problem, take him to the vet as early as possible.

Yeah just keep him comfortable, make sure he knows your there. For all you others who don't know some cats in Australia live outside and that is normal especially in the country so stop giving the poor woman a hard time.

Make he doesn't get out until you can get him to a vet's. Double check for puncture wounds. You can use Hydrogen Peroxide on them. It will help get rid of any potential infections. Carefully observe him till you can get him to the vet's.
