Hi, for first time traveller, I will recommend a city tour to know where places are and what you can expect to see in Bangkok. Otherwise you will not be aware of what the city is like. There are many types of tour packages that you can get after you have arrived in Bangkok. If you have a place to stay, there will be a couple of travel agents nearby whom you can approach to get a package. A typical sity tour will cost about 500bahts or about US$12. This is usually a half day package that shws you around the sights in the city. There is also a half day river cruise, to see Bangkok from the river view. This is good. Bangkok i also known as the Venice of Asia due to its waterways for travel. Cost about 500bahts too.
These tours will help you see the key sights in Bangkok. Then if you want more specific tours, there will be other packages available, or if you are adventourous, you can go on your own. Taxis are not expensive. Only snag is the heavy traffic. The other way is to take the skytrain and underground train to the district and take a cab from there. Can cut traffic jams.
Read up what you can do on www.lonelyplanets.com and visit www.tourismthailand.org for info on Bangkok. You will be better prepared. You can email me if you need more info on what you want to do there. I will be happy to help.

Thailand is a wonderful country to visit. First, I wouldn't go on a tour deal. You can take a friend or meet a new Thai friend that will love to guide you for a few dollars a day. Stay at the Malysia Hotel. It's cheap, safe, clean and in a good location and the staff is very helpful in directing you to places etc. They speak English. The rate is $12-14 US dollars and it includes breakfast! Their you will for sure meet like travelers. You can gain a whirlwind of knowledge as to places to go, things to see etc. from sitting in the lobby and listening to the informal discussions. I live there part of the year and have a Thai friend who loves his country and loves to show it off and share it with tourists. He's 100% honest, polite, friendly and knows Thailand very well. He will spend an hour, or a day or a week at your beconed call and show you what you want to see and do and tell you what's available. I can share his email with you if your interested. If you have more questions or concerns I will be happy to correspond with you. I know alot of tricks in traveling in Thailand. I was a first time tourist once myself. Maybe if I'm there when you are I can show you my favorite places to eat. The whole trip is much cheaper than most places. I eat lunch almost everyday for about 85 cents including a can of coke. I have always found the best air fares on China Airline out of eithe LAX or SFO. Let me know what else you want to know.

get south east asia on a shoe string by lonely planet - or just wait till u get there and buy it 2nd hand for a couple of dollars. thailand is a really easy and beautiful place to travel in. people are really freindly helpful and welcoming, everything is logical and easy to understand. hostels are really cheap in bangkok and the food is fantastic. trains are very cheap and reliable - and good fun too and you will meet loads of other people travelling to join up with, chat to and share knowledge with. it will be the trip of a lifetime if you do it!

Don't do package deals. Just fly to Bangkok, go stay on Khao San Rd., where you will find cheap places to stay and people your age. Then, go by yourself or with friends you make on Khao San Rd., and see the Grand Palace, the Reclining Buddha (Wat Po), the temple of the Dawn (Wat Arun), and on Saturday or Sunday go to Chatuchuk, the huge weekend market. Besides that, just enjoy the other things you would like to do. But those things I said are must-sees for every tourist.
