you earn friends when you do not talk about other people when they are not present. - you gain acquaintances by talking nice about other people when they are not present. - you attract associates when someone else talks bad about you when you were not present. - and you make enemies when you talk bad about yourself when they are present.

Good question, Suzy. Be a nice person, be polite, friendly, and considerate of others, and you will make friends without trying.
I went to college, and was early for an appointment. I went to sit down, and there was Karen, who had brought her mother with her. I knew her from high school, but had never has the chance to speak to her. I sat down, and talked to them both. That was 34 years ago, almost to the day. She is still my friend. And her mother still tells her to say hi to me.
The hard part is keeping that friend, you have to earn their continued friendship.

To make new friends, you must be approachable. To be approachable, you have to smile and be friendly to all you meet. Also, do not judge a book by its cover. Be nice to everyone. From acquaintances, you become friends. To earn your friendship, you have to be a good friend. Good friends are not calculative, are good listeners, comforting, helpful, and sincere. When you are down and out, you will know who your true friends really are. So be there for your friends when they need you.

i find just positive and friendly attitudes are always the easiest way to meet new people and create friends. also when you actually seem interested in the person when speaking to them usually helps too. try not to seem too forward or stalker like but be nice and start off casual. like if theres a common resturant you both like or movie for example. then move it alone to hanging out. so forth. if theres a connection then usually a friendship will be the result. i hope this helps you in friendships.

I really like that you said "earn a friendship"!

Be yourself.

Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Keep your word. There is no good excuse for not keeping a promise. Your word is your bond.

Never lie.

I find that most people like and appreciate you more if you focus on them rather than yourself. In this way you can relate much better with people. Accepting people for who they are, respecting their strengths, along with their weaknesses will go a long way in building realistic relationships. If we go around looking for undesirable traits in people that we meet, we will oft times get what we are looking for.
Another true factor in making people like you is by extending plain common courtesies to them. Treat others as you would like to be treated has always worked for me. One more thing to remember, compliments do great things for people and in return you will feel appreciated. Good Luck.

Act the way you'd like your friend to act...

and the one's that measure up are your friends.

The rest are selfish, obnoxious, abusing morons...

Sometimes it is hard to tell BUT friends can be forgiven their trespasses unless they turn into selfish, obnoxious, morons...

BUT I find I'm repeating myself. Good luck... no one's perfect BUT if they're not even trying... then they're- well you know!
