When we book our tickets online via an airline's website, can we just reserve them and not pay for them yet?

- for instance, when we are applying for a visa to a country, we don't know if we will get accepted or not and if we have to pay for it upfront, it may be troublesome getting our money back if our visa application is denied; can it be where we can pay for our online ticket purchases only when our visa application is accepted?
