Yes, I bought a Littermaid for my cat 5 years ago. It works great and it has never broken. You have to use scoopable litter and buy the waste receptacles every 3 months, but it's well worth the money.
They do not work very well for multiple cats, you will be changing the waste receptacle too often.

We have two cats, and we had one about a year ago (it was a litter maid). It did work for a while. The cats loved to watch it. It does have the sensor that won't trap the cat. The real pain came from replacing the receptacles all of the time. They did get expensive after a while. My bigger problem was that it didn't have a lid, and the cats would get litter all over the place.

I'm back to scooping every other day.

we have the this really huge one, it's called the Purr-something I forgot but I really like it although it cost almost $200 after tax. One problem we have with the regular litter box is that unless you're cleaning it out right after your cat uses it, although he buries it to some degree the next time he uses it, he's either going to be sitting on it or his foot going to touch it when he's burying his new droppings. The automatic litter box elimanates this as it cleans it out ten minutes after use. It also has an auto detect to stop if their is movement in the machine. It's a little loud though so I wouldn't recomment unless you can put it outdoors or on the patio.

We have the older Littermaid. They recently came up with a new one. It works great, it has lasted for 3 years so far. The problem is that if you leave the waste in the receptacle long enough, it will start to grow mold. I wasnt going to dump it every day, but I didnt want to wait until the receptacle filled all the way up. We came up with an idea of lining the receptacle with a walmart bag. You can change it whenever you want and it saves you a bunch of money on receptacles.

My cats didn't like the NOISE !! Maybe it's been improved, this was a few years ago. I clean my cats litter box every morning, just part of my routine, then I can carry it out to the trash with me on my way to my car. Lots cheaper than an expensive mechanical litter box.
I did recently buy one of those Litter recepticles (forgot the name) for my daughter to try out at her place with two cats, it works like a diaper genie, you put the litter in it and when you turn the handle it closes the bag off so you don't smell it. She hasn't reported on if it's working for them or not !

I had a great cat, but he was too long for any litter box. The idea of the self cleaning box was good, but his urine corroded the wiring. (We think)
You're better off with the old dish pan and really good kitty litter and a scoop!

I heard that sometimes the cats can become caught in them just like linsdey said. I know it sux, but your cats will appreciate simple cleaning. I have 3, & they seem overjoyed, (seriously) when the boxes are clean. I scoop twice a week, change the litter about every week.

I have one each and locate it sufficient. it received't scent in case you employ good muddle - i take advantage of "sparkling Step Scoopable" . you even ought to sparkling it a minimum of once each 2 days and it is the least. a week you should wash the bins throughout and spray with some anti bacterial product.

I have six cats and seven litter boxes. I never considered buy automatic ones as that would run me $700.

You have to clean and monitor an automatic box anyway so I couldn't feature that it would be any help to me.

they work pretty well, especially if you have multiple cats. as for the$130,I got mine at Wal-Mart for only $100.the only thing you have to do is emty out the tray about once a week and it can be reused. the kit comes with 12 refills but you really need one unless it breaks.
