Actually, speaking as a former Catholic, now a Christian, I don't think "worship" is the proper term. They venerate her. They think of her as a mediator between us and God, and place her on the same level as Jesus. In some dioceses or Catholic churches, they may take it too far, more so in churches south of the border, but I can only speak from my experiences. We were never taught to worship her, just venerate her as someone higher than other humans.

Think of Mary as any other Catholic Saint. She was chosen by God for a specific task. It is thought that she is holy because Jesus, who is a perfect and divine being made man; came from this woman, whom should be holy in her own right. (according to several friends who are catholic, btw most of them don't even know why they worhip Mary.)

God could have chosen any other woman to bear Jesus. Just like God could choose you to do a specific task, but that does not mean you are to be worhiped. The only being worthy of worship is GOD.

Many Catholics reply to this question with "We don't worship her, we venerate her." But this has always bugged me. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the light. No one comes to the Father but by me." Yet Catholics pray to the Saints and to Mary.

I also get fed up with the fact they call her the Virgin Mary; yes she was when Jesus was born, but Jesus had brothers, so she couldn't have remained a virgin or there would have been a few too many Immaculate Conceptions.

Catholics do NOT worship Mary. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you. Catholics worship God alone.

Catholics only worship God.

We do not worship Mary.

Catholics share the belief in the Communion of Saints with many other Christians, including the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Episcopal Churches.

The Communion of Saints is the belief where all saints are intimately related in the Body of Christ, a family. When you die and go to heaven, you do not leave this family.

Everyone in heaven or on their way to heaven are saints, you, me, my deceased grandmother, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Mother Teresa.

As part of this family, you may ask your family and friends here on earth to pray for you. Or, you may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, or your deceased grandmother in heaven to pray for you.

With love and prayers in Christ.

I agree with other people how Catholics say they don't worship Mary. Yet they put her on a platform with flowers and what not, carry her around their church parking lot or community and sing praises about her. Why not do the same thing for Jesus Christ.

Hello,
I am an ex Catholic. Catholics will not say that they worship Mary but they pray to her, burn candles to her, offer adoration to her and some say that she is the co-redemtrix ( part of the salvation of man). Thus, it is all in how you define "Worship"
Catholics believe as other Christian denomination in the Holy Trinity, that is, three persons of God, the Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost.

Catholics do too worship Mary, even if they refuse to admit it! They have statues of her all over the place, and they pray to her, and then of course there's all the sightings of her "image" in pancakes and mudpuddles and whatnot that everyone gets all excited about and have vigils. If that's not worship, I don't know what is.

Purpleaura1's long-winded explanation to us poor, ignorant protestants is merely a bunch of meaningless semantic hair-splitting.

A better question to ask is "Why are Protestants so ignorant about the beliefs of Catholics?"

Catholics neither worship nor pray to Mary. They do ask Mary to pray for them and they do honor her. The typical response from Protestants to this is "Why ask her to pray for them -- we pray directly to God." Catholics also pray directly to God. When I ask Protestants if they ever aska relative or friend to pray for them always say "Yes" -- so there goes their argument. Sure Mary is dead -- but if you believe in Heaven, why is it so hard to believe that those that are with God cannot hear our requests.

Personally, my prayers are usually addressd to "God, or gods, if you exist . . . ."

I was Catholic at one time. I always thought about that too. Catholics say they don't worship her but I have seen them get down on their knees and pray to her. That is called worship. When you have to pray to Mary to have your sins forgiven, that is worship.
