I've lived everywhere from the LA area to rural Tennessee, and Abilene, TX is just right! My kids grew up here and it's a great place to live. It's small enough to be friendly, but with three universities and a strategic air force base, there is plenty of culture -- and we're only 150 miles from Ft. Worth if you want to visit the city.

Everyone raves about Napa, California, wine country. It safe. It is also hot in the summertime and expensive but very beautiful.
Its a bigggggggggg country. I suggest you choose a place that has good weather for starters.

I would say any part of the Carolina's is a wonderful place to live. My sister lives in Florence, SC. We were both born in North Carolina and it has many nice places as well. In S.C. you could move closer to Myrtle Beach.

Chapel Hill, Nc is very nice and pretty quiet, but the houses are expensive, but there is also near by Burlington and Pittsboro..which are around 40 min from Chapel Hill.

I would definitely avoid the South. Try Seattle, WA or one of the large metropolitan areas in California.
