hellion210's answer is not only smart and logical, it appears to be written by him at the moment, as opposed to being pasted from somewhere

blacks were not allowed to marry whites and not allowed to vote until just a few decades ago.... were they EQUAL under the law? Were women equal under the law when they were not allowed to vote?
These laws were CHANGED because, clearly, some groups were not being treated equally , as the constitution mandates ... Thats why some religious conservatives want to AMMEND the constitution

thats pretty much it. america is the greatest country in the world, but we have a long way to go as far as treating everyone equally. gays cant get married in most places, so they dont get the same tax breaks straight married ppl do, and they cant visit each other in the hospital if one is dying, etc. marriage was originally the joining of a man and a woman in the eyes of GOD, a religious idea. so, if the government is going to completely ignore the concept of seperation of state from church, then they should make marriage available to all. i bet most ppl wouldnt be real happy if all of sudden our government started to adapt marriage policies of another religion.... islam, judaism, buddhism... maybe something native american? inheritance is another big one. gays cant claim things that they shared with someone for decades if that person dies.
truthfully, the constitution should have read "all white men that are straight, believe in god, and own land are equal. we'll sort out everyone else later".
but, things are progressing somewhat these days. slow but steady. its kinda weird that ppl talk about the "sacred act of marriage", but we all know damn well ppl have been married for financial and political reasons since the dawn of time. i mean, arranged marriage was the norm for centuries among a lot of cultures. 2 straight ppl that had never met were FORCED into a loveless marriage, but we'll deny 2 gay ppl who do love each other, brilliant society we are.
i get a laugh out of ppl that say sexual preference is chosen by an individual. let me ask when you decided to be straight? you thought about the options and chose that one? i bet not, you were born straight. so why is it so hard to fathom that some ppl are BORN gay?
and i completely agree that nobody should have the right to go flamboyantly romping around town naked. the idea of a gay pride parade makes me wonder who it is that thinks that a show of action like that will help a cause. i wouldnt wanna see a straight pride parade any more than a gay one. i'm just kinda anti naked parades i guess.
as for the religious aspect.... well, i dont have the right to force any of you to submit to buddism, islam, judaism, taoism... etc, so you dont have the right to make someone live according to the laws of your religion. and being a catholic myself, i'm pretty sure i remember reading about how judging others was for God and God only, for any of us to do so is a sin.

Having a gay kid is almost sure to cause a very big problem in many families. Some people just totally refuse to even consider the situation other than a "sin" or a family breaking point.
Another form of this problem is when the father begins to react sexually to the young maturing daughter. Kids end up feeling as if they caused the problem, or marriages break up because of problems about sexuality.
So, to answer your question, the United States is way behind the curve when it comes to sexuality compared to some Countries in the world. One of the ironies is the way in which the United States military deals with sexual problems in and off base anywhere in the world.
In Okinawa, the military basically ran the whore houses in towns around American bases back in the early 1960's. They did for practical reasons. GI were showing up with VD and had to be treated. Some times the problem was more sever than other times because a serious VD would show up at the base which could really lead to an epidemic if not controlled.
So the military set up clinics for the prostitutes and monitored and treated girls in the sex trade so they could stop the disease at the source.
The military through the local government would authorize Troops to go into only bars that had "A" signs on them which meant that girls who worked in these bar were treated in specific clinics and monitored. So the rates of VD were kept down to a manageable level.
Now, my point that our government here at home is just not very practical about this problem, so they try and sweep it under the table. But it fails to work.
If the people of the United States would handle the sex thing like the military does overseas there would be a lot less fantasy land quality to the way we handle many problems in America.
And yes, the Constitution does not make any exceptions that exclude anyone from the same rights, so the Forefather's are all inclusive in their wisdom, but the Country has not caught up with our Founders as of yet.

I'm pretty sure you are referring to gay marriages-right? Unfortunately, marriage is not an institution covered by the constitution. So technically, they are equal under the constitution. Also, I just wanted to say that I am quite disheartened by some of the replies I've seen to this question. I thought this nation was progressing. Regardless of the Bible's thoughts on homosexuality, Jesus loved us all no matter what, right? So WWJD?

Dear friend... All the people are equal under law.But when law had been made at that time gay and lesbians were not known or not so common. But now a days new definitions and changes should be made so that all humans including gay and lesbians should be given all rights which are available for others.
I believe in equality.

Some of the kindest people I know are gay-and that's just a fact. I don't agree with their lifestyle, but God is the only judge not me. I don't believe gays should have the right to be legally married, but if one was hungry or their car broke down and they needed a ride I would be there in a hurry to help.

Of course homosexuals are people, but the Bible calls the ACT of sodomy 'an abomination' before God.
it is basically worshipping and serving the 'creature' more than the Creator.
Thus it is idolatry and a grave sin in the eyes of God.
This sin can be forgiven if you are serious and willing to repent and allow Christ to cleanse you .

Sorry, but I don't understand your question. Which laws don't apply to gays? A speeding gay still gets a traffic ticket. A stealing gay still gets sent to jail. Gays still have the right to vote. Gays can own property.
Which parts of the constitution do you think exclude gays?

In theory, homosexuals are supposed to be covered by the law. But because of the stereotypes that we are homewrecking nymphomaniacs, we are considered beneathe the law.
What can I say, we live in a flawed world.

Of course. All citizens of this country have human rights. You are people. Rejoice in being an American, because that is the country who follows the Constitution.

Well, on a technical basis, gays have all the rights as everyone else because they can still have opposite-sex marriage while a straight person can't have same-sex marriage either.
