For instance, God is portrayed as angry and wrathful in the earlier parts of the old testaments, but doesn't anger result from human weakness and insecurity. Abraham pleads with God to spare the cities, but in Jonah the roles are reversed, with Jonah being the one who wants to see the city destroyed instead of being merciful.
The Bible says that anger is a sin and to turn the other cheek, and how can humans possibly be more patient than God. Also, the new testament says that salvation is by grace and God has no regard for human goodness, since no one is righteous, but then why would Noah be spared from the flood.

God's anger is not a weakness. It's his reaction to human weakness when they blatantly disobey Him. Jonah was hoping the people would not repent they God had him preach to. Much the way blacks and whites sometimes think. The bible does not say anger is a sin. it says be angry and sin not. Don't let your anger cause you to say or do harm.

Of course the contradictions in the Bible make it less reliable.

Deep down inside, everyone knows this. Some people just don't want to let themselves consider the possibility that everything they believe is based on a lie.

I think the Bible is the revealed truth about God -- revealed meaning that it is a gradual process. Could a barbaric society handle Christ's message?

Just like life -- we are babies then we grow and can understand more -- a toddler can't understand the ramifications of moral decisions (typically) because they don't have the experience to reference.

God can't tell us everything we need to know all at once because we can't understand it.

God is seen in the Bible through the eyes of people - it colors everything that's there.

The contradictions in the Bible are irrelevant. It would still just be a book of myths and legends even if it were internally consistent.

It is odd that an all-seeing all-knowing god would (or even could) change his mind and attitudes. He would have know how it was all going to turn out.
