How about the Finger Lakes? You can get a cabin at Taughannock Falls State Park (see http://reserveamerica.com/servlet/availabilityOnWeb?site=all&type=9&park=218&agency=NY&start=09/01/2006&stay=7&defaultStay=false&sc=NY&go=/jsp/matrix.jsp&minimal=yes&end=10/17/2006&startday=-1)
for under $200 and then you can tour the vineyards in the region for really cheap. The wine is excellent and the park is beautiful (in fact, it's where I am going to get engaged.... but shhhh I wasn't supposed to find out). But seriously, it would be perfect. The cabins are right near the lake and there are a ton of good places to eat in the region. Ithaca has a really great Indian food restaurant that is dirt cheap and if you go to Watkins Glenn (less than 30 minutes west) you have to go to the Wildflower Cafe/Roosterfish brewing company. Great food for a great price and amazing beer. Also, if you head out that way stop out by Caywood vineyards and taste their chocolate lab and chocolate strawberry wines. So yummy! For touristy stuff there is Seneca Falls (go feminism!) and Corning Museum of Glass. I went to the finger lakes 3 times this month and it is one of the best places on earth.
Good Luck!

What about the Lake Sunapee region of New Hampshire? That area is scenic, abt 265 miles from NYC, but not as expensive as Lake Winnipesaukee & other well known destinations.
One quick look showed a few cottages under $1,000/week on some of the neighboring lakes.
You can take a look at them at:
www.cottagesrus.com/index.html
or call their toll-free number (1-800-639-9960) to talk to a real estate agent who handles listings of cottages in the area.
In NY, the Lake George area in the Adirondacks is about 215 miles north of NYC. Cabins for Lake George & some neighboring lakes are listed at:
www.lakegeorgenewyork.com/lake-george-cottages.htm
The cabins below $1,000 don't seem as cute as the ones in NH, but then I didn't check out everything that was available.
Southern Vermont, with Lake Champlain and Lake Dunmore, have cabins available at:
www.cyberrentals.com/USA/Vermont/Lake-Champlain-Valley/r124.htm
Check out the cute waterfront places they showed for Ferrisburg, VT (300 miles from NYC) and points south.
Just look for lakes on a map, within 300 miles of NYC. Do a google search by typing in the name of the lake/area, plus "cottage" or "cabin." Check out the links & have fun shopping.
I'm familiar with all the areas mentioned, and I'd vote for the Sunapee area and southern Vermont.
Many blessings for your upcoming wedding, and may you find the most romantic little cottage for wonderful honeymoon memories!

I don't know anything about the east but I know a way you can raise more money!!!!! This may sound crazy but 1k isn't enough!! Tradition in my family is to raise money at the reception for the honeymoon, such as dollar dances bride and groom, and one thing my family does that always raises over 1k is "kidnapping the bride", what happens is basically the brides siblings and cousins "kidnap" her and take her to a bar for drinks...during this time, the MC receives a "ransom" note saying we gotta raise 1k dollars or whatever...and then the MC along with the groom pleads for donations for the ransom, after about an 30mins to an hour the bride returns....YOU and your GROOM will have the money for extra expenses for your honeymoon and you can just use the 1k you have now to buy the air tickets, and hotel, then whatever you receive from your relatives is bonus for the rest of your accomidations. Good Luck and Congrats!!

The Poconos are a big honeymoon destination. Knoebels is a fun little amusement park. There are a bunch of lakes and stuff in PA.
I love the Outerbanks, NC but that might be too far.
How about the NY wine country? It's beautiful up that way.

How about Western NY. I used to live around Jamestown, NY. There is lots of wine country, and it's not too far from Niagara falls. There are a couple of lakes in the area. Good luck.

Central NY is veeeeeeery beautiful and there should be lots of cozy, small lake cabins for rent. Even the state parks and tourism department has them in their state parks. And, they would be close and would not break your wallet. I would call them tomorrow and see what they have and what their suggestions are.

Why do you need the added stress. Maybe you should wait and have your honeymoon in a few months that way you'll have some more money saved and at that time it should be off season with possibly better deals.
