Would it be uncomfortable if you are already in there and you say "Yes"? Someone turns down your bed while you just sit there. I mean how hard can it be?

Hey if you feel uncomfortable, say no. The hotel does this as a service to guests, it is supposed to make you feel like an honoured guest instead of just another customer, and it is an opportunity for the workers to get a tip. Some people say no because they are tired, and just want to sleep. No one will be mad, or fault you. Just say no, thank you, and leave it at that.
If you say yes, remember the worker has done this a thousand times, and doesn't mind you sitting there. Just grab a book or turn on the TV, and say thanks, and offer a tip.

The purpose of a turndown service is to make your bed seem more inviting. It's just another way hotels try and make their patrons feel special. The reason you are offered it even when you are there in the room is that the staff is obligated to perform or at least offer to perform every service on their little "to do" list. Some picky folks might actually complain if the service wasn't at least offered to them.

I second the chocolates! They also usually refresh your towels and do a minor clean up including emptying the trash & you can ask them for foam or fiberfill pillows so you don't have to sleep on those flat feather ones they always have in nice hotels. They'll also remove your room service stuff if you haven't already called. Also, it's not awkward if you tip them. I usually take the service so I can get more towels, my family usually goes thru all of the towels everyday. I just busy myself with something else, reading or whatever I was doing when they knocked. TV is a bad choice here, you feel really lazy watching TV while they do all of the work.
