I will hopefully be engaged within the next two or so months, and i would like to get started on wedding planning. From your experience, what is the first thing I should tackle? I am going to have a Roman Catholic wedding and it will most likely be in my homestate, colorado

First thing is call your priest and tackle his requirements and pre canna. You need to be engaged for 6 months to get married in the church and he will need to set up the date based off of the liturgical calender. Then register at theknot.com and set up your wedding webpage so everyone can get the information easily. You don't need a wedding planner if you have the time to do it yourself.

Then start working on the major details: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.

Who: Who is going to be in your wedding party?, who are you going to invite?, who is going to officiate? Who is going to pay?

What: What is the theme? What level of formality? What is a must and what can you live without? What is you budget?

Where: Where is the ceremony? Where is the reception? Where is your honeymoon?

When: What date? What time?

Why: Why do you want to get married? This is the premarital counseling stuff which I highly recommend. Don't get so excited about your wedding that you forget about your marriage.

Congratulations again and Good Luck!

The budget. I realize now that I spent wayyy too much of my family's money on little touches that make no difference to me now. Keep in mind that you are getting ready to start your life with another person, which will be expensive as you merge into a home. There are many things to be bought and paid for after the wedding! Write up a budget and stick to it so you don't have to break yourselves and start your relationship off in the red.

First, choose the date or a range*. Then the location (city, state). Plan a budget and estimate how many people you would like to invite.

Based on those things, find a church and reception hall, * you may need to be flexible on your date to get what you really want.

Then follow along with everything else.

The first thing you should tackle is picking your dress. And don't pick it online. Go and try on dresses. Ask the sales person which dresses will fit your body-style best. Once you have chosen your dress you can tailor the wedding around it. Definitely hop on the officiant, venue, caterer, photographer, florist, dj, band, musicians for the ceremony and rehearsal dinner sites as soon as you can. Hope this helps!

Congratulations & have fun with this!

I wish I'd thought to show a photo montage video at the reception. It would have been fun, and a lot of the people at the wedding didn't know a lot of other folks, so pictures with so many of the guests in them would have been a way to involved folks who might not have felt so much involved.

Date, church (especially since you'll need to do pre-cana being Catholic), hall -- do those straight away. Then give yourself a chance to breathe and relax!
