plastic, paper usually do not have handles making it harder to carry only 2 bags unlike the plastic with handles you can usually carry a few bags making for less trips from the car

Well, paper kills trees. Plastic is made from oil (the root of all modern evil). Neither is a good choice for the environmentally conscious. Plastic, however, does last longer, which can be either beneficial or harmful depending on your consumption habits. Paper decomposes more quickly, though is not as easily recyclable.
If you want my opinion, I've recently discovered bottled products of which the plastic-like container is actually made of 100% corn oil. It is completely organic, and if you wish to dispose of it, it is easily biodegradable. If only we had known about this technology 100 years ago, the world might be a happier and healthier place to live.
