Could someone provide me with a list of words containing "*****" used as an adjective that are acceptable in today's modern American society? For example: I remember in my 5th grade history book, they spoke of "***** slaves" and "***** spirituals" and of course, there's the United ***** College Fund. Are there any other socially acceptable uses for the word "*****"? Thanks in advance.

Let me clarify even though it's already clarified. When is it appropriate to use the word "*****" as an adjective describing something of or belonging to historic negroes when referring to historic events? A list of vocabulary terms that have been acceptable and are currently acceptable will do. Thank you.

i guess only when it's part of a commonly-used idiom or phraseology like the ones you mentioned. To just use it to describe the people or a person, I guess that's not cool anymore. I don't agree with this whole thing of what we need to call one group or another this year as opposed to last year, it's crap. But whatever... if you're writing in a professional or academic setting you need to play by the rules.

Why are you so fascinated with the word *****. ***** is derived from the spanish word negre which simply means black. The word or term is currently out dated. If you are worried about being socially acceptable, the term to use when referring to black people is African American. However, I just simply like to use the term American. I feel all people are of the same race. The human race. Peace and God bless.

Race is such a touchy issue, and there's really no consistent answer. What bothers one might not bother another...
I would think that in names...Rio *****, for example...you HAVE to use the word. You don't really have to use "*****" in referring to slaves or spirituals...most people would assume that, anyway.
For awhile there...in the 1960's and 1970's...the word "*****" was the preferred term among blacks. I think the reason that blacks/african americans keep changing is that...no matter what term is used...it winds up just being another synonym for "***.ger".

Honestly, unless you are African American or speaking of an organization that has that word in it's name, it is never acceptable in today's culture to use that word. (or unless you're speaking spanish, I guess.)
