Good question.
For me, personally, I try not to be a "take the Bible literally, shove Christ down your throat, OMG you don't go to church every Sunday?!?!" Christian. I'm trying to be a little more open minded than that. I have no intention of attempting to think like God. In all honesty, I don't really know what 'trying to be like him' is like. You're right; It's kinda hard to be like someone you don't understand.
I think the Bible is open to interpretation, just as a person should be open to interpretations of faith. The Bible's "intentions"? It really depends on the person. The really important thing about the Bible (like the Torah and Koran) is that millions--billions of people live by it (or try to, at least) and take solace in its teachings.
For me, I'm not trying to be 'like' God; I'm trying to let Him work through me. I'm opening myself up to love, faith, hope, peace...good things. Now, I know that atheists, agnostics, new age people, whoever--everyone is capable of this, it's just that I myself prefer to put myself in the way of the Lord.
Bottom line? I don't think logic has anything to do with it. I like to think I'm a logical person myself, but...what use has the heart and soul for logic?

Jesus asked us to strive to be perfect in the same way that he was perfect. I don't know that the Bible needs to be looked at as a "manual for life" as much as people try to make it. It was written almost 2000 years ago. Situations that exist today could not have even been imagined at that time. There was no possible way the writers of the Bible could hit every single situation in the same way that the writers of the US Constitution could not anticipate every problem that was going to exist in the future.
So yes, there are things in the Bible that may or may not make sense to use now, but they were relevant at the time of press.
And I don't know God's exact intent for my life, but I try to pray for that to be revealed to me, and try even harder to listen for an answer.

As we mature as Christians, we align our thoughts more and more with God's thoughts. Of course, we could never hope to obtain all the wisdom and knowledge of God, but we can know His will, and we can, see things as He sees them. And, again, we do see through a glass darkly, that is, we don't see the whole picture, but as we grow, as we study the Scriptures and especially as we study the life of Christ, we steadily align more and more of our thoughts with God's. We try to be Godlike in our actions and our thoughts by following the pattern set by Christ, He was God in the flesh, and the perfect example of what a holy life completely sold out to the Father is like.

So would you avoid university because the professors don't know everything?
People don't become like God by straining to be - They do it by letting him change them.
