if it has a shell, putting it into the fridge can preserve it for a longer time, but it can be placed into any suitable environment other than the fridge

They don't have to be, but keeping them in the fridge will keep them fresh longer. After all, how long did they sit in the hen house before they made them to the grocery store cooler?
