Win 98 is not supported by Microsoft any more, meaning there will not be any patches or fixes for the OS.

What are you using that Win98 would be an upgrade???

WinME came out over 6 years ago, and so did Win2Kpro.

WinXP has also been out a while and has had 2 service packs already.

before you attempt to upgrade, insure that your machine can handle the OS that you want to upgrade to.

If you are using Win95 OEM (the OS that shipped with the machine) then your machine is probally not able to handle XP, I have successfully loaded Win2k on a 233Mhz PII but i had to max the memory but it ran. At any rate, if your Machine is old and slow, and with Win95 or worse yet Win3.x I would seriously consider getting a newer machine. If money is tight, there are many older machines on ebay, or second hand stores. Shop around and don't buy more machine than you need and can afford.

An upgrade WinXP will NOT work on a Win95 OS. To even attempt to load WinXP you will have to buy a full or OEM version.
If you check walmart, you can get a machine for next to nothing, with an OS that is current and many other programs too. keep in mind that very few if any of the programs that work with Win9x will work with WinXP

Assuming you're serious here, you need a new computer. If you're still using something that uses Windows 95, it's incapable of running any modern operating system. Even upgrading to Windows 98 will be difficult. You need to locate a system disc somewhere, somehow, and even then Microsoft no longer supports Windows 98.

Are you seriously still running 3.1 or 95?! Where have you been?! LOL I think it's time for an update, but skip 98(and 2000 and ME) and go for XP

Well this pc originally had W95 on it and I've upgraded it to W2000.
I added memory a DVD burner and network card.
All with no problems..
I have a laptop with XP on it and I think it sucks.. One day
when I get time I'll "downgrade" it to W2000

If your PC is at least 450mhz and works well I'd stick with it.
Unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket.

What are you using? Don't bother to "upgrade" to Win98 because it is no longer supported. Current users are into WindowsXP, and probably early next year, Windows Vista will be out and we all will be scrambling.

If you feel the need to upgrade, please at least go to WinXP.
